Observations he reported are treated in this article as field claims and preliminary data, not as established archaeological conclusions. Wyatt’s investigations were typically exploratory rather than stratigraphic excavations. He relied on surface surveys, limited subsurface probing, photographic documentation, interviews with local residents, and, in later years, collaboration with technicians who conducted geophysical scans such as ground-penetrating radar and resistivity testing.
Because his work operated outside formal peer-reviewed excavation frameworks, Wyatt’s claims have been met with substantial skepticism from mainstream archaeologists. Some researchers argue that his interpretations exceed what the available data can support. Others contend that certain features he documented warrant further controlled study, even if his conclusions are disputed. For the purposes of this article, Wyatt is not presented as having “proven” the location of Noah’s Ark. Instead, he is presented as a central figure who popularized a specific Ark-site claim and whose reported observations form a large portion of the modern discussion surrounding that site. Location of the Claimed Ark Site

The site lies near the Durupınar formation, a boat-shaped geological feature first identified in aerial imagery in the late 1940s. The formation was initially noted in 1948 by a Turkish Army captain during aerial reconnaissance following a period of heavy rainfall and seismic activity. Subsequent aerial photographs attracted attention due to the formation’s elongated, symmetrical outline and its resemblance to a large vessel shape.
Wyatt became aware of the site in the 1970s and visited the location multiple times over subsequent decades. He proposed that this formation represents the remains of Noah’s Ark, preserved in a petrified state beneath sedimentary layers. The site’s elevation is approximately 6,300 feet (1,920 meters) above sea level. Proponents argue that this elevation is consistent with the Genesis description of the Ark coming to rest in the “mountains of Ararat,” a phrase understood to refer to a mountainous region rather than a single peak.

Geographically, the region lies within a tectonically active zone where the Arabian Plate collides with the Eurasian Plate. It is important to note that multiple Ark-site proposals exist in the greater Ararat region, including locations on Mount Ararat proper and in surrounding mountain ranges. The Durupınar site is therefore one of several proposed locations rather than a universally accepted candidate.
For the purposes of this article, the Durupınar formation is examined because it is the site most extensively associated with Ron Wyatt’s field investigations and because it has been the subject of multiple imaging surveys, material claims, and public discussion.
During the mid-twentieth century, aerial reconnaissance photographs of eastern Turkey revealed an unusual, elongated formation in the region south of Mount Ararat. One of the earliest documented identifications occurred in 1948, when a Turkish Army officer observed the feature during an aerial survey following seismic activity and heavy rainfall. The formation later became known as the Durupınar site after Turkish cartographer İlhan Durupınar publicized the photographs in the early 1950s.
The images attracted international attention because of the formation’s symmetrical, boat-like outline and unusual proportions. French geologist Dr. Fernand Navarra and later researchers examined the site and reported that its overall dimensions were broadly consistent with the general proportions described for the Ark in Genesis, although interpretations varied regarding its origin. Some investigators, including Dr. Arthur Brandenberger, evaluated the formation and concluded that it most likely represents a natural geological structure shaped by erosional and tectonic processes. Others have argued that the morphology warrants further investigation due to its distinctive geometry.
Life magazine in 1960 recorded this incident, inspiring a young Archaeologist Ron Wyatt, who, through much study, concluded this was the only candidate likely to be the Ark.
Small Village – Nuh un Gemisi (Noah’s Ship)
The boat-shaped formation near Doğubayazıt in eastern Turkey is widely known in contemporary Turkish literature and public discussion as “Nuh’un Gemisi” (Noah’s Ship), a label that appears in modern regional studies, symposia, and cultural tourism contexts. While the formation itself was first documented in aerial photography in 1959, there is no verifiable evidence that this name was in continuous local use prior to the 20th century; instead, it reflects a modern popular designation tied to the longstanding association of Mount Ararat with the Noah narrative.
Physical Characteristics of the Formation

The Durupınar formation presents as an elongated, lens-shaped structure with a clearly defined perimeter and a roughly symmetrical outline. When viewed from above, the feature resembles the hull shape of a large vessel, tapering toward both ends and widening near the central axis.
Genesis 6:15 states: “And this is how you shall make it: the length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its breadth fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits.” (Genesis 6:15) [These figures establish the dimensional framework against which Ark-site measurements are often compared]:
- Length: 450–510 feet (137–155 meters)
- Width: 75–85 feet (23–26 meters)

The surface measurements taken by various investigators indicate an overall length of the Durupinar formation to be approximately 150–160 meters (490–525 feet) and a maximum width of approximately 45–50 meters (145–165 feet), depending on measurement method and reference points used. These values are frequently cited because they approximate the general dimensional ratios described for the Ark in Genesis (length-to-width ratio of 6:1) (Genesis 6.15). We have to be mindful that this correspondence alone does not establish identity.

The width of the visible formation, however, is substantially greater than the biblical breadth of fifty cubits. Measurements across the widest portion of the formation are often reported in the range of 45–50 meters (145–165 feet), roughly double the width described in Genesis. To address this discrepancy, some proponents propose that the visible outline does not represent the original intact hull width but rather reflects lateral spreading caused by structural collapse, sediment infill, and geological deformation over time. According to this interpretation, an original hull approximately fifty cubits wide could appear significantly broader after the collapse of sidewalls, displacement of internal decks, and outward slumping of overburden.
Some proponents have argued that subsurface imaging surveys at the site indicate internal linear features consistent with structural compartmentalization. Wyatt and associated technicians reported that resistivity and radar scans revealed a series of roughly parallel anomalies running transverse to the long axis of the formation. These features were interpreted by Wyatt as possible internal structural elements, sometimes described as analogous to bulkheads or internal framing.
Based on these scans, Wyatt claimed that the spacing between certain anomalies corresponded approximately to a width near 26–27 meters (about 85–88 feet), which he suggested aligns with the biblical breadth of fifty cubits when using a longer cubit estimate. He further reported the presence of several large rectangular subsurface anomalies that he interpreted as possible internal chambers and one larger opening-like feature interpreted as a possible access area between deck levels.
Alternative explanations propose that the formation rises several meters above the surrounding terrain and is embedded within sedimentary layers consistent with water-deposited materials. The exposed surface consists primarily of compacted earth, fragmented rock, and weathered stone. They exclaim that no exposed timbers or intact structural components are visible at the surface. Several observers have reported linear features beneath the surface that appear roughly parallel and evenly spaced, which some interpret as possible internal structural elements. However, such features can also occur in natural geological contexts, including jointing, bedding planes, and fractured strata.
Geophysical Survey System
Wyatt reported that ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys were conducted at the site using equipment manufactured by Geophysical Survey Systems, Inc. (GSSI). According to Wyatt’s accounts, the radar profiles revealed multiple linear subsurface anomalies running longitudinally and transversely within the formation. These anomalies appeared at relatively consistent intervals and depths, forming patterns that he interpreted as internal structural elements analogous to framing or bulkheads.
Wyatt further claimed that radar readouts were shown to representatives associated with GSSI for informal evaluation. He reported that technicians, including individuals identified as Tom Fenner and Joe Rosetta, reviewed the data and expressed the opinion that the anomaly patterns were inconsistent with typical natural geological formations and more consistent with an organized subsurface structure. In addition to radar imaging, Wyatt reported that magnetic surveys detected linear metallic anomalies that appeared to correlate spatially with some of the radar-identified features. He interpreted this correlation as possible evidence of metallic reinforcement or mineralized structural components.
It must be emphasized that no formal GSSI technical report, peer-reviewed publication, or institutional statement confirming a man-made structure at the site has been publicly released. The above descriptions therefore represent Wyatt’s reported interpretations and recollections of informal consultations rather than independently verifiable conclusions. Geophysical methods such as radar and magnetometry can reveal subsurface density contrasts and conductive materials, but they cannot by themselves determine whether anomalies are biological, geological, or artificial in origin. Consequently, these findings should be regarded as preliminary field observations requiring controlled excavation and independent replication before any structural conclusions can be drawn.
In contrast, geophysicist Tom Fenner, who conducted extensive GPR surveys at the site in the late 1980s and was associated with GSSI, explicitly rejected the characterization of the formation as man-made. Fenner said he was “surprised and dismayed” that his name and GSSI’s were used to support claims that the formation was the remains of Noah’s Ark, and stated that his own radar work did not convince him the site was artificial and that after repeated scans he became more skeptical of such interpretations.

Metal and Magnetic Anomalies
Wyatt reported that metal-detector surveys at the Durupınar formation produced evenly spaced linear anomalies, which he interpreted as possible locations of internal fasteners or structural reinforcement. Using surface markers and ribbon lines, Wyatt and associates mapped these anomaly patterns across the formation in an attempt to visualize the internal layout of the structure.
It should be noted that these mapping exercises and interpretations originate from Wyatt’s field observations and have not been published in peer-reviewed geological or archaeological journals. Colonel Irwin’s participation in Ark search expeditions does not constitute independent technical verification of Wyatt’s specific structural conclusions.
Ron Wyatt participated in several expeditions to eastern Turkey alongside other independent Ark researchers, including Colonel James B. Irwin (Apollo 15 astronaut), who led multiple Mount Ararat search missions through the High Flight Foundation. Irwin publicly expressed his belief that Noah’s Ark could exist in the Ararat region and supported continued exploration of reported sites.
Multiple survey teams and independent investigators have reported unusually strong magnetic and metal-detector anomalies at the Durupınar formation. These anomalies occur in linear patterns that appear to correspond with the long axis and internal structural features of the boat-shaped formation. Early field surveys documented regularly spaced subsurface signals consistent with elongated metallic objects or mineralized material rather than random scatter. The repeated detection of parallel linear anomalies has been cited as one reason some researchers interpret the site as potentially containing structural elements rather than representing a purely geological formation.

Wyatt and associates interpreted these linear anomaly patterns as possible locations of metallic components embedded within the formation. According to these field reports, the signals appeared to form long, parallel lines consistent with the internal framework of a large vessel rather than the irregular distribution normally expected from natural ore bodies.
Wyatt-associated reports state that individuals described as a geophysicist named John Bomgarnder and a marine specialist named Dave Tassel participated in portions of metal-detector mapping and site examination at the Durupınar formation, assisting with the placement of markers to visualize anomaly patterns across the structure. No independently published or peer-reviewed documentation currently verifies their institutional affiliations or confirms the interpretive conclusions drawn from these field observations.
In addition to surface metal detection, limited geophysical scanning was conducted using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) equipment in the mid-1980s. These surveys reportedly revealed elongated subsurface features that appeared to correspond spatially with the magnetic anomaly lines. The coincidence of radar-reflective features and metal-detector responses was interpreted by Wyatt’s team as suggestive of internal structural elements.

Wyatt and associates reported that samples taken from within and around the Durupınar formation were submitted for limited laboratory testing, with results allegedly indicating the presence of elements such as iron, aluminum, magnesium, and trace metals in proportions they considered inconsistent with typical local volcanic rock. According to these accounts, some analyses were interpreted as suggesting unusually high concentrations of certain metallic elements that proponents argued could be consistent with mineral-replaced metal components rather than purely natural stone. These interpretations have been used by advocates to support the idea that portions of the formation may contain remnants of a large ancient structure.
Rivet-Like and Fastener-Like Objects
Several expeditions to the Durupınar formation reported the recovery of small metallic objects from the surrounding soil that were described by Wyatt and associates as rivet-like or fastener-like in appearance. These objects were generally characterized as roughly cylindrical or irregular metallic fragments, sometimes exhibiting corrosion and mineralization consistent with long-term burial.
Wyatt interpreted these items as possible remnants of structural fasteners used in ancient ship construction. In some cases, it was claimed that the objects appeared to be composed primarily of iron or iron-rich material and that their distribution near the boat-shaped formation corresponded broadly with areas where metal-detector anomalies had been reported. No peer-reviewed metallurgical analyses have been published confirming the composition, age, or cultural origin of these objects. Without controlled excavation, stratigraphic documentation, and laboratory testing, such items cannot be reliably identified as manufactured fasteners rather than naturally occurring iron concretions, slag, or other geological materials.
Accordingly, the metal and magnetic anomaly data should be understood as preliminary field observations that raise questions warranting further controlled investigation, rather than as definitive proof of an ancient ship structure.
Petrified Wood and Organic Material Claims
Several investigators associated with the Durupınar site have reported the presence of stone-like material they interpreted as petrified or mineralized wood embedded within portions of the formation. Some of these materials were described as exhibiting fibrous textures or grain-like patterns that proponents considered suggestive of former organic structure.
Ron Wyatt proposed that if a large wooden vessel had been buried rapidly in a post-Flood environment, subsequent volcanic activity, mineral-rich groundwater, and long-term geological processes could plausibly result in mineral replacement (petrification) of the original timber. Petrification of wood is a well-documented geological process in which organic material is gradually replaced by minerals while retaining structural form.
Wyatt-associated accounts report that following seismic activity in the region during the late 1970s, portions of the formation exhibited exposed, elongated stone-like features that were interpreted as possible timber remnants.
Wyatt reported collecting samples of this material and submitting them to Galbraith Laboratories for compositional analysis. According to Wyatt’s published summaries, Galbraith Laboratories reported the following values for one sample:
- Total carbon: approximately 0.7100%
- Inorganic carbon: approximately 0.0081%
- Calculated organic carbon: approximately 0.7019%
Wyatt interpreted the predominance of organic carbon as consistent with mineralized organic material rather than purely inorganic rock. The same summary reports iron content near 13%, which Wyatt suggested could be explained by mineral-rich groundwater infiltrating and replacing original organic tissue over time. Wyatt further reported that some of the stone-like features interpreted as possible timbers lacked visible growth rings, which he found unexpected. He speculated that this might be consistent with the biblical description in Genesis 2:5–6, which describes the earth being watered by mist prior to rainfall. This interpretive connection reflects theological reasoning rather than a testable scientific conclusion.
From a scientific standpoint, the claims associated with petrified wood at the Durupınar site remain preliminary and unverified. While mineral replacement of wood is a known natural process, determining whether any specific samples from the site represent fossilized timber would require controlled excavation, thin-section petrography, and independent laboratory analysis published in the scientific literature. However, no peer-reviewed paleobotanical or petrographic analyses confirming the identification of these materials as fossilized wood from the site have been published. Without thin-section microscopy, comparative wood anatomy, and documented laboratory testing, it is not possible to reliably distinguish petrified wood from naturally occurring volcanic or sedimentary rock that can display superficial wood-like textures.
Stone Anchor (Drogue Stone) Claims
Numerous large, upright stone slabs with drilled holes have been documented in villages and mountainous regions of eastern Turkey, including areas surrounding the Mount Ararat region. Some of these stones are displayed locally and are traditionally referred to by residents as “Noah’s stones” or “anchor stones.” Proponents of the Ark identification argue that these objects resemble ancient drogue stones—heavy stones used by early seafaring vessels as stabilizing anchors rather than as bottom-anchoring devices. Similar pierced stone anchors have been documented archaeologically in several ancient maritime cultures of the Mediterranean and Near East, including the Bronze Age.
Wyatt and other independent researchers proposed that such stones may have been associated with a large vessel during or after a catastrophic flood event, possibly transported and later repurposed by local populations. Some of the stones reportedly bear carved markings or petroglyph-like features, which proponents interpret as symbolic or identifying marks.
However, mainstream archaeology does not recognize a demonstrable connection between these stones and Noah’s Ark. Comparable pierced standing stones are also known to have served non-maritime functions, including cultic markers, boundary stones, memorial stones, and architectural elements. Without controlled excavation, stratigraphic context, and datable associations, the original purpose of these stones cannot be determined.
From a scientific perspective, the anchor-stone claims represent intriguing cultural artifacts whose function remains uncertain. While their size, shape, and perforations resemble known ancient stone anchors, no verifiable archaeological evidence currently links them specifically to the biblical Ark.
Notoriety and Public Recognition
During the 1980s, the Durupınar formation and the investigations conducted at the site received substantial international media attention. Several news outlets reported on Turkish government interest in the location and on claims made by researchers who believed the formation might be related to Noah’s Ark.
In 1986, Turkish authorities designated the area as a protected geological and cultural site (often referred to as a “natural monument”). This designation acknowledged the site’s unusual boat-shaped morphology and its significance to regional heritage and tourism. It did not constitute an official scientific declaration that the structure is Noah’s Ark, but it did reflect governmental recognition that the formation warranted preservation and continued study.
Following this designation, local and national authorities supported infrastructure development in the area, including road access and the establishment of a small visitor center, and the site was publicly presented in association with the traditional Mount Ararat–Noah narrative that has long been part of regional and religious culture.
